SmartAsset seeks a data journalist

Naturally curious, with strong attention to detail, you have a keen ability to identify topics that people enjoy reading about and sharing on social media.  A consummate team player, you have experience writing pieces driven by insights in data. You can juggle a wide range of tasks including pitching stories, conducting research and creating compelling content. You are an Excel expert.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from a top university
  • Strong understanding of statistics
  • Superior excel skills are a must
  • Experience writing data driven pieces
  • Excellent editing, grammar and online writing skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work quickly and efficiently
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Can take ownership of an article from start to finish
  • Past personal finance/business is a major plus

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
