Skift seeks a tourism reporter

Skift, the most influential media company covering the business of travel, is seeking a full-time reporter to report on and oversee the coverage of the tourism and destinations sector. The primary responsibility is reporting and writing daily news and enterprise stories. The position is remote anywhere in the United States, as Skift is a fully distributed remote company.

This role is unique in both its scope and level of detail. As global tourism is a massive beat, you will need to be adept at finding the meta narratives shaping tourism right now, from climate change to geopolitics. At the same time, you will also need to have your ear to the ground at the destination level, covering important tourism funding news, clever new campaigns, changing traveler demographics and trends, and other developments at this pivotal moment in tourism.

This beat is truly intersectional, and there is as much opportunity for general interest stories as there is for scoops in the tourism marketing world. Tourism leaders will be looking to your stories to ask (and answer) hard questions, and you will succeed when you find the threads that the wider travel media has yet to pick up on.

This position is a chance for you to work with the best editorial team in ALL of travel and the best boutique media company around.

The ideal candidate will bring experience reporting and writing on business with strong contacts in the tourism sector. Along with this, you should have a good understanding of the macro trends in the business and marketing worlds.

The position will report to Skift’s editor-in-chief.

Some of What You’ll Do

  • Contribute regular stories about the business of tourism.
  • Research tourism-related businesses for insight into operations, trends, and growth.
  • Interview leaders, operators, and experts in the industry.
  • Follow global macroeconomic trends and report on how they impact the sector.
  • Constantly think of new ways to tell stories in engaging and smart ways. Never follow the pack.
  • Communicate with the overall team about stories you’re actively working on.
  • Participate in Skift’s global forum conferences.
  • Represent Skift at travel industry events, our own events, and media appearances.

The Experience You Bring

  • Experience in business reporting. B2B or business publishing experience preferred, but consumer media experience considered.
  • Demonstrated experience of covering breaking news as well as day-to-day industry coverage.
  • Extensive contacts in the tourism sector is ideal.
  • Deep understanding of the macro trends in business and technology.
  • Exceptional writing and copy-editing skills.
  • Proficiency in WordPress, Photoshop, and Google Docs.
  • Proficiency in languages is a plus for our global coverage.
  • Flexibility to travel when necessary.

How You Work

  • You communicate openly and share information regularly with your colleagues.
  • You exercise astute and ethical judgment in your everyday actions.
  • You form successful and strong work relationships.
  • Your enthusiasm and dedication are at the heart of how you collaborate well with your teammates.
  • You’re passionate about the world of travel.
