The Silicon Valley Business Journal seeks an associate editor.
The Associate Editor is a critical player in the planning and production of the weekly print product, and also contributes to the weekly and daily publishing cycles in multiple ways: helping plan and execute special publications and focus sections, copy editing, helping recruit and coordinate with freelancers, and serving as the primary backup for the Print Editor.
In a multi-platform media operation, it’s critical to reformat, reuse, reshape and guide content for print and digital outlets alike, and the Associate Editor serves as a key player in this mandate. Through innovative storytelling, inventive layouts, and ambitious concepting, the Associate Editor ensures the best reporting efforts of the newsroom are put to their fullest use.
The Associate Editor, along with the Print Editor, is charged with merging the specially-themed issues with the core weekly print product itself. The Associate Editor also may serve, at the direction of the Print Editor, as the editorial department’s liaison with other departments in matters that pertain to awards publications, events, and other cross-departmental activities. Finally, the Associate Editor serves as the publication’s top quality control officer, establishing, and executing against processes that ensure proofing and editing of all original content for all platforms.
Duties:
• Conceive of and execute the production of special publications and focus sections, in collaboration with the Print Editor.
• Source and coordinate with freelancers in the production of business journal content.
• Gather, format and repurpose online content for print.
• Edit and proof copy for style, clarity, spelling, grammar, consistency, context and accuracy.
• Put systems in place that ensure the Business Journal adheres to local Business Journal and Associated Press style.
• As called upon, contribute to editing of news items throughout the day for the Business Journal’s digital platforms.
• Assist Editors in managing awards publication production, including outreach to judges and awardees.
• Check and sign off on print pages, in coordination with Editors.
• Write headlines, sub-heads, and cutlines, and other informational or graphics copy. As with all copy, the Business Journal’s goal is 100 percent accuracy.
• Paginate stories, in collaboration with Editors.
• Maintain and update local Business Journal stylebook at a minimum once a year and a target of once each quarter; communicate changes to editorial staff members.
• Perform variety of news, production and administrative duties.
• Regularly participate in and attend Business Journal sponsored events.
• Take on any other assignment made by manager(s).
• Work cooperatively and collaboratively with all colleagues and professionally with sources.
