The Seattle Times is seeking a high-energy reporter to cover technology news and develop enterprise stories on a general-assignment basis. This reporter will keep pace with the fast-moving tech industry and help readers make sense of the tech environment they see around them every day.
While this reporter will have general assignment responsibilities, he or she will focus on work that captures the vibrancy of the growing startup community, its venture backers and lifestyle. The Seattle area is one of the top five most active startup communities in the country as Baby Bills and Baby Jeffs pop up and thrive in a VC-charged environment. The reporter will follow the money, and cover specific VCs in our circulation area and the companies they fund; analyze industry trends and leaders; and report on how these big ideas are changing our lives and the region.
The reporters must:
1.Have experience or deep interest in the business of technology and the ability and analytical skills to translate developments into compelling, readable stories.
2.Spot significant and topical trends across different segments of industries, users and businesses.
3.Be able to jump on breaking news while also working on well researched enterprise stories.
4.Be responsible for coverage of tech startups while maintaining a general-assignment flexibility.
5.Develop topical or issue-oriented coverage areas that command public attention at any time.
6.Be active with social media and social media reporting.
7.Write for digital presentation, in addition to conventional channels – A1, Business and other sections.
8.Work within a team environment with other reporters covering technology. Work cooperatively with other groups in the news room, including the news desk, photo, graphics and digital.
9.Be able to travel. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, car and auto insurance.
10.Cover evening events and work occasional weekends.
11.Must have a minimum of three years’ reporting experience in a news organization, with at least two years in business or technology news. Familiarity with Methode and WordPress a plus.
