Scientific American seeks a general science news reporter who can immediately jump on the news of the day—whether it’s a dinosaur discovery, a natural disaster or disease outbreak, a debate in particle physics, a political development or a cultural trend that could use a science explainer. The optimal candidate will have a keen eye for what makes a compelling science news story, enthusiasm for all fields of science and the ability to work on tight deadlines. The reporter will work closely with Scientific American’s beat editors and the rest of the editorial staff, including engagement editors and our multimedia team.
Responsibilities:
- Identify important, interesting and awe-inspiring news items
- Report and write compelling and grammatically sound copy for news stories
- Collaborate with manager and other editors to complement Scientific American’s other news coverage
- Attend conferences and events to find stories and learn what scientists are most excited about in their fields
- May be involved in multimedia efforts, including videos and podcasts
- Contribute to team discussions, idea-generation and editorial strategy
- Develop awareness of timely issues in science, science policy and the scientific community; help identify breaking news stories and trending topics for coverage; build a source network to seek insights and developments that will be exclusive to Scientific American
Experience, skills and qualifications:
- University/College degree, preferably in Journalism
- Two years of experience as a science news reporter, preferably online
- Experience in and enthusiasm for news and journalism; comfort with journalism values and best practices
- Excellent writing and reporting skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and on tight deadlines
- A commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and justice
- Existing knowledge of science preferred
- Experience using data and SEO to inform decision-making a plus

Annualized Base Salary Range: $69,000 – $73,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education and skill level.
