San Jose Mercury News seeks breaking news tech/biz editor

The Bay Area News Group is looking for a reporter/editor to write, curate and edit breaking technology and business news for MercuryNews.com, SiliconValley.com and affiliated web/mobile/print properties in the Bay Area News Group.

This job is in a fast-paced, digital-first newsroom in one of the nation’s most competitive media markets. The successful candidate will use their knowledge of Silicon Valley companies and players, as well as technology trends, to deliver a steady flow of coverage for readers interested in the latest news from the world’s technolog hub. The job involves a combination of writing, including a weekday email newsletter, and editing the work of others. The job is based in San Jose.

Responsibilities

— Works with reporters, editors and photographers to ensure that breaking technology and business news is promptly posted to web/mobile/social platforms.

— As needed, reports and writes breaking technology and business news stories.

— Writes the weekday 60-Second Business Break email newsletter.

— Uses social media for sourcing, content distribution and engagement with readers.

— Works collaboratively with business editors, producers and others to ensure sure technology and business stories are assigned, edited and displayed appropriately on digital platforms and in print.

Requirements

— 2-5 years experience in journalism, with tech/business reporting or editing experience in a digital-first or digital-only newsroom strongly preferred

— Strong knowledge of and interest in the business of technology and its social and cultural impacts

·– Experience editing the work of others

·– Experience optimizing digital content

— Ability to work under deadline pressure

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
