Journo Jobs

San Jose Mercury News seeks an economy reporter

We’re hiring at the Bay Area News Group, and one of the best jobs will cover perhaps the most fascinating economy in the nation.

This reporter will explore the full range of the Bay Area’s economy — home to Silicon Valley, the engine powering California — to write both breaking news and enterprise stories about everything from how small businesses are emerging from the pandemic to how the rising cost of living is creating wider gaps and pushing teachers, firefighters and construction workers to live far from the communities they serve. Using data and a diverse source list, you will mine the topics of wages, job creation, economic recovery, wealth and poverty, explaining how those trends are reshaping not just neighborhoods, but entire cities and the future of work.

What happens in the Bay Area resonates across the country and around the world — and our news organization has the ambition and ability to tell these stories with the impact they warrant.

If you’re a strong candidate you’ll have these qualities:

  • Excellent news judgment and demonstrated knowledge of economic issues
  • Strong writing under deadline pressure, for online and print audiences
  • A fascination and facility with data coupled with the skill and experience to analyze it and seek out new sources of information
  • Experience juggling multiple stories of varying complexity, from quick news posts and daily news stories to longer-term enterprise and features
  • At least four years experience as a working journalist

In our diverse region, facility with multiple languages is also a plus.

Interested? Send a cover letter, resume and 6-8 clips showing your range of abilities to newsjobs@bayareanewsgroup.com. Make sure to include the words “economy job” in the subject line. Also, please fill out a formal application here. We can’t reply individually to everyone, but we’ll get back to you if it looks like you’d be a good fit for our openings.
