San Diego Biz Journal seeks tourism/manufacturing reporter

The San Diego Business Journal is seeking a reporter to cover tourism, food & beverage, manufacturing and the economy in general. We’re looking for a news driven reporter who can provide context to our B2B audience. We have a daily email newsletter, a robust weekly glossly print product and several annual products.

We’re looking for a reporter who can identify and explain emerging trends and turn profiles of industry leaders. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with strong organizational skills who is able to cultivate sources, has strong analytical skills and is able to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online.

The reporter we seek will have a solid understanding of news writing and journalistic ethics, know how to build and leverage relationships with sources to deliver compelling content; and contribute to the planning and production of visuals, from photographs to charts and graphics.

Qualifications

2-3 years reporting experience required and must have produced numerous stories that provide context, insight and analysis. There is no relocation budget for this position.

Responsibilities and Duties

Our staff reporters report and write short news stories for our daily news report and several longer, more in-depth stories and columns for our weekly print edition.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
