San Antonio Express NewsThe San Antonio Express-News is seeking a deputy business editor to help oversee its nationally acclaimed and award-winning business section, both online and in print.

This person will report to the Business Editor and will assume total responsibility for the section/department when she’s out of the office.

The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge covering or overseeing business, finance or market news, with an emphasis on enterprising journalism. As the seventh largest city in the country, San Antonio is at the center of many major national and international narratives, and a hub for international trade, energy, health care and the military, in addition to its traditional tourism sector.

A successful candidate should exhibit a mastery of digital journalism, with a proven ability to work fast on the fly, break news and write or edit in-depth features and investigative projects. Experience producing digital interactives and videos are a plus. That said, a candidate also needs old-school editing and production skills and the experience and vision to help conceive, edit and showcase complex stories.

Between eight and 10 years experience as a reporter or editor is preferred.

Major businesses with headquarters here include Valero, the largest U.S. refiner and No.10 on the Fortune 500, and H-E-B, the privately-held grocery and drug-store company with more than $20 billion in annual sales and operations in South Texas and northern Mexico. The Express-News covers a broad swath of South Texas, including the Rio Grande Valley, and often sends reporters to Mexico.

The Express-News has bureaus in the Rio Grande Valley, Austin and Washington and is owned by Hearst Corp., a diverse media company that also owns the Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle and the Albany TImes-Union, as well as many other newspapers, magazines and television stations.

If you are interested in pursuing high-end journalism in a dynamic region where local stories often have national implications, this is a job for you.
