San Antonio Express-News seeks a trending reporter

The Digital Reporter will pitch and write 3 to 5 short stories a day to be posted on expressnews.com. They will keep a finger on the pulse of San Antonio — what people are talking about and what readers are interested in. They will work in a fast-paced environment and focus on audience engagement and growth. We need a self-starter with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills and is comfortable taking feedback.

Requirements: 

  • This position is full-time. Evening/weekend work may be required.
  • 1 to 3 years experience in a similar position required.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism preferred.
  • Solid news judgment and a strong understanding of the local market.
  • Proficient writer, fact-checker, and familiar with AP Style
  • Understand web metrics to guide story choices toward KPI growth.
  • Baseline knowledge of analytics and CMS tools such as Chartbeat and Google Analytics.
  • Organized and able to meet deadlines in daily and breaking news situations.

Duties: 

  • Pitch and write 3 to 5 stories a day based on what’s trending in market
  • Create and maintain a steady supply of sources for story ideas that allows a depth of ideas each day that can provide different options to choose from
  • Be familiar with contact information for various agencies to obtain information as quickly as possible
  • Pitch and create alternative forms of content, including listicles, slideshows, and timelines
  • Work with other newsroom staff on shard byline projects as necessary
