San Antonio Express-News seeks a deputy biz editor

The San Antonio Express-News is  looking for an experienced, thoughtful editor who wants to build a business weekly from the ground up.

The San Antonio Express-News will launch the tabloid in the next few months. The deputy business editor will oversee most aspects of the publication, including making assignments to Express-News business writers and freelancers, editing, collaborating with our photo and design teams, and contributing occasional articles. The person will have a strong sense of what will hold the interest of business-minded readers and a compelling vision for the publication.

Requirements: 

  • This position is full-time.
  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years of editing experience in a newsroom or a related work environment.
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience with business reporting (as writer, editor or both).
  • Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Proven track record of collaboration (with writers, designers and photographers) that resulted in high-quality work.
  • Strong ability to plan ahead.

Duties:

  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, designers and photographers to develop strong story packages.
  • Edit copy till it shines, with a strong sense of the publication’s voice.
  • Plan content, photos and design several issues in advance.
  • Consistently promote the weekly on social media platforms and in occasional podcasts and outside public-affairs program appearances.
  • Occasionally fill in for the business editor.
