The San Antonio Express-News is seeking a business editor to direct coverage across platforms, with particular focus on enterprising journalism in a rapidly-expanding region that is a hub for international trade, energy, health care, and the military in addition to its traditional tourism sector.
A successful candidate needs to exhibit a mastery of digital journalism, including overseeing the development of verticals in key coverage areas. Being entrepreneurial by coming up with new products is an important trait. That said, a candidate needs old-school editing and production skills and the experience and vision to conceive, edit and showcase complex stories. The candidate should also be adept at working with other reporting staffs on overlapping issues, such as the environment.
Equally important is the ability to inspire the staff to break news, spot trends and establish dominance in our marquee beats. They include covering the million-barrel-a-day Eagle Ford shale-oil play, the influx of new residents that is putting San Antonio on a path to become the nation’s fifth-largest city, and the expansion here of the National Security Agency and military cybersecurity operations.
Major businesses with headquarters here include Valero, the largest U.S. refiner and No.10 on the Fortune 500, and H-E-B, the privately-held grocery and drug-store company with more than $20 billion in annual sales and operations in South Texas and northern Mexico. The Express-News covers a broad swath of South Texas, including the Rio Grande Valley, and often sends reporters to Mexico.
