The Sacramento Business Journal seeks a managing editor for digital news to oversee the newsroom’s online operation. This means leading the morning meeting, working with five reporters and a staff photographer, writing and editing stories, updating the site and assembling two email newsletters a day.
Duties also include:
- Conceiving and executing multimedia packages, including video and photo galleries.
- Working with the newsroom’s social engagement manager to maintain the paper’s vibrant presence on social media.
- Continually monitoring web and social-media metrics and working with the editor to set strategy.
Candidates must have a competitive drive to break news. They must be fluent with digital tools such as Photoshop and Excel and enjoy learning new skills. Strong writing and editing skills are essential. So is knowledge of SEO and a flair for headlines that have a distinctive voice and compel attention. Leadership skills must include an ability to remain cool under pressure and earn the respect of reporters.
This editor also must have mature judgment and be able to balance the highest standards for content with ambitious traffic and engagement objectives. He or she will be responsible for expanding our audience while maintaining the “Business Journal lens” — a focus that provides practical business intelligence about local industries.
Newsroom experience required, preferably as a business editor, city editor or web editor. Some video and HTML experience preferred.
