Posted by Chris Roush

The Sacramento Bee is looking for a versatile reporter to cover business in Sacramento and the surrounding region. This journalist will focus on key issues that are shaping the business sectors in the capital of California, a state that is the home to the world’s fifth-largest economy.

Sacramento is known for its state government employment, but its dynamic profile is evolving. Health care, tech, energy and real estate are centers of employment and change.

This reporter will deliver breaking stories on business developments, from new business, high-profile hiring and contracts, government funding and major projects. We’re looking for a journalist who can also develop enterprise stories about the changing landscape of business, especially as it intersects with other topics that are relevant to Sacramento and California, including government, higher education and environmental news.

This reporter will explain how business is changing in our city and how it affects the 2 million people living in the Sacramento region.

We’re seeking a journalist who understands the audience for these stories, including employers, employees and consumers, and who has experience with SEO, visuals and data.

Education: College degree preferred.

Experience: At least 3 years of reporting experience, preferably on local issues.

Skills Needed

  • Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
  • Commitment to ethics.
  • Ability to build source networks and bring a constant flow of story ideas.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
  • Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
  • Facility with data, public records and business reports.
