The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (sabew.org) is searching for a dynamic and creative executive director to lead the organization into a future bright with possibility. These are exciting times for the news industry — we seek a leader who will help us craft a vision to capitalize on new opportunities.
SABEW is the largest association of business journalists, with more than 4,000 members worldwide.
It is based at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in Phoenix. The group, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, includes editors, writers, media executives, and educators. It hosts two major conferences a year plus an annual awards competition that attracts more than 1,000 entries.
The executive director reports to the Board of Governors and its Executive Committee, and is responsible for all SABEW operations.
The ideal candidate wears many hats well: Administrator, strategic planner, project manager, fundraiser, event planner, ambassador and schmoozer. SABEW’s executive director must be adept at managing both a small, efficient office staff and a large, diverse board of governors.
He or she also has:
- Bachelor’s degree and five-plus years’ management experience with a nonprofit, preferably in a media-related industry
- Five-plus years’ experience in program and fund development, including personal solicitation and grant writing
- Excellent communications skills, including fluency with social media; experience overseeing a website
- Experience with membership development, including database management
- Experience managing conferences and events
- Experience developing and managing a budget in the $450,000 range
- Demonstrated success in working with a volunteer board and its committees, and working on collaborative projects and partnerships with other organizations
