Riverfront Times seeks an audience engagement editor

August 22, 2023

Posted by Mariam Ahmed

The Riverfront Times’ brand-new owner, Big Lou Media, is looking for an Audience Engagement Editor to oversee audience outreach and traffic growth for its four publications, which include the Riverfront Times, Cincinnati CityBeat, Detroit Metro Times and LEO Weekly in Louisville, Kentucky.

We’re looking for someone who understands the alt-weekly voice and knows how to be cheeky in headlines and subject lines — but also likes the organization of a good spreadsheet and never misses a deadline. The ideal candidate will be a utility infielder who can step into a variety of roles across markets and enjoys pinch-hitting when needed. They should also have their finger on the pulse of the latest social media crazes — whatever will eventually take over for Twitter, Reddit or whatever platform dies next.

This role is part of the editorial department and will work with our local editors across markets to build audience and loyalty through editorial newsletters and social media platforms. This person will also be involved in analysis of audience and traffic, and assist with the editorial component of on-going technology upgrades.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage an efficient process for creating weekly editorial newsletters to build a more engaged and loyal audience.
  • Create daily Twitter and Facebook posts, and engage with readers using replies and shares.
  • Create daily Instagram posts
  • Working with staff, create TikTok videos and Instagram reels when appropriate
  • Create posts within publication Reddit accounts, and crosspost where appropriate.
  • Create daily Google News Showcase panels.
  • Handle ongoing maintenance of Apple News accounts.
  • Handle ongoing maintenance of Google Search Console.
  • Bg alert to breaking news and help mobilize editorial teams to cover it.
  • Report and analyze traffic, audience, and acquisition.

The knowledge and skills we’d want you to have:

  • Ability to build healthy, collaborative relationships with multiple editorial teams.
  • Expert copy editor with proficiency in AP Style and SEO best practices.
  • Ability to write clever headlines and social media posts that match our publications’ tone.
  • Understanding of Google Analytics, social media insights, and content management systems.
  • Understanding of high engagement social media posting and newsletters.
  • Highly detail-oriented with excellent news judgement.
  • Must possess journalistic integrity and understanding of reader needs per platform.

The experience we’re looking for:

We’re looking for someone with a few years of experience in a digital or print newsroom, but equivalent experience may substitute. If you’re a clever writer who understands journalism and enjoys being online, we can train you for most parts of this job.

Applicants should send a resume, three clips of published work and a letter explaining their interest in the position to Sarah Fenske at sfenske@riverfronttimes.com. If you have questions before applying, email inquiries are welcome.
