The role, based in either San Francisco or New York, involves a mix of spot news and initiative stories, with a strong emphasis on stories that break news and otherwise provide unique information and insight.
While this position will involve coverage of a range of topics in the sprawling world of technology, one important focus will be the massive and fast-changing world of corporate computing. New technologies and services such as cloud computing and machine learning are bringing about wholesale changes in the way big companies approach information technologies, and the reporter on this beat will be responsible for covering many aspects of these changes and their impacts on companies and industries.
Specific areas of responsibility will likely include the emerging cloud computing sector, next-generation software and storage companies and new technologies such as predictive analytics and artificial intelligence. Cybersecurity, especially as it relates to cloud computing and big data, will also be an important part of the beat.
The position will involve frequent collaboration with reporters in San Francisco, New York and Washington as well as colleagues in overseas bureaus. The successful candidate will encouraged to pursue big, high-impact story ideas even when they don’t fall within traditional beat reporting lines.
The ideal candidate will be an aggressive reporter with at least three years of business journalism experience. Experience covering the technology industry and an existing set of sources in that field would be major assets.
The ability to write quickly and accurately under deadline pressure is essential, as is the ability to develop the sources and contacts that are critical for big stories.
Familiarity with contemporary social media and multimedia tools, and the ability to work well with others in a highly collaborative environment, are also required.
