Reuters seeks retail reporter in Chicago

Reuters is seeking an enterprising journalist ready to break news on the retail and consumer products beat.

Walmart, Sears, Target, Procter & Gamble and Colgate-Palmolive are just a few of the household-name companies on this beat.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to break news, cover developments quickly and accurately, and dig inside some of the most interesting and compelling companies in the U.S.

The retail story has many threads, ranging from M&A to consumer trends to workplace issues—a particularly hot topic in the day of the $15-an-hour wage movement.

Qualifications

The reporter who covers this beat should be able to identify and pursue such trend stories without losing sight of the earnings, product and corporate strategy news that are the foundation of covering this beat.

Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate an ability to handle complex topics with precision and insight in a competitive news environment. An ability to develop sources, both in face-to-face encounters and also remotely, is key.

Proven experience in covering labor issues—including pensions, workers’ rights, and unionization topics—would be a plus.

Given the financial state of several major companies in the retail sector, prior experience covering a major bankruptcy likely would come in handy over time.
