May 1, 2019

Posted by Chris Roush

Reuters Canada is looking for a dynamic  correspondent to cover its financial services sector, which includes some of the world’s top banks as well as prolific dealmakers such as top-ranked global pension funds which are investing in everything from technology to infrastructure and energy project across the world.

Canada’s struggling energy sector and mining industry are ripe for consolidation, while the pension funds and asset managers are actively scouting for deals in new markets, providing the successful candidate opportunity to break news on big cross border transactions. Those M&A deals, and the debt and equity required to fund them, are a big revenue source for the investment banking arms of the major banks.

Based in Toronto, the ideal candidate should be able to build sources among Bay Street financiers and regulators; break into the secretive world of pension funds, tap bankers/lawyers and other sources and collaborate with reporters around the world to land high-impact exclusives. She/he will be able to distinguish Reuters coverage by producing a series of deeply-reported stories and scoops while managing the spot file.

Qualifications

  • 5-10 years experience
  • Prior experience of covering financial services and deals
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Proven ability to generate innovative story ideas and turn them into wire-ready stories
  • A strong team ethic
  • Good organizational skills, with an ability to manage breaking news as well as conceive and help execute insightful stories

The role is based in Toronto and reports to Denny Thomas.
