Reuters seeks deputy managing editor for Americas

Reuters LogoReuters is seeking an experienced editorial manager to help oversee its news operations in the Americas.

Reporting to the Washington-based Managing Editor for Operations, the Deputy Managing Editor is in a unique position to help shape Reuters’ strategy and operations in a region that includes Canada, the United States and Latin America. The Deputy Managing Editor will work closely with the Managing Editor to ensure that the news operation runs smoothly and that we are making the investments needed to innovate and continue delivering high-quality news.

The core responsibilities of this role include helping manage the regional budget, overseeing hiring and staff issues, learning and development, diversity and ensuring the safety of reporters in the field. The Deputy Managing Editor will also be a liaison between the editorial team and some of the other Thomson Reuters businesses, helping us understand what news  clients need and working with the editors and bureau chiefs to find the best way to deliver it.

The Deputy Managing Editor will also play a role in managing Reuters’ relationships with governments in the region, maintaining communications with key ministries and helping resolve disagreements when they arise.

This role will be based in New York.

Job duties

  • Work with the Managing Editor, Americas to manage a regional budget
  • Help craft our news strategy for the region
  • Manage projects to help achieve editorial priorities
  • Manage hiring and staff assignments, learning and development and diversity efforts
  • Help ensure the safety of journalists on assignment and the development of bureau safety plans
  • Serve as a liaison between editorial and the other Thomson Reuters businesses
  • Help manage editorial’s government relations when needed
  • Work with bureau chiefs to solve their operational and staff challenges
  • Help make ethical judgements on stories
  • Represent Reuters at official events and in the media

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience as a journalist with 3-5 years progressively responsible experience managing teams
  • Exceptional organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities and effectively allocate scarce resources
  • Ability to master a wide range of relationships, responsibilities and perspectives
  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese/experience in Latin America a plus
