Reuters is looking for an experienced and imaginative journalist to join the news editing team as deputy company news editor in London.
The successful candidate will have a strong history of breaking news and coming up with memorable story ideas that push our reporting forward and make a difference for clients. The company news file is huge, spread across sectors from telecoms to oil and gas. It ranges from the fast snapping of disclosure news to breaking exclusives, to producing richly-reported initiative pieces that dig deep into a company or sector to tell stories that matter and can change people’s minds.
The Deputy Editor will be expected to spot important stories in the morning rush of disclosure news and work with correspondents to build up well-reported stories from the spot. He/she will also work with specialists and bureaus to build up stories on sectors, sub-sectors, major themes etc to ensure our file is original and innovative.
The successful applicant will have a track record of excellent writing, reporting and story-telling. They will be able to coach reporters in all those aspects and be able to step in and help write and edit if necessary. They will also have to build good relationships with the rest of the editing team to make sure Company News is a core feature on the Top News pages and that we have the business angle of all the top stories well covered. They will know how to encourage reporters to get stories out and how to build a memorable file, both in the traditional and expanded core of what we do.
The deputy company news editor will also have excellent communication and personal skills as a lot of the work with correspondents is done by phone and email. They will need to communicate ideas clearly, liaise with other regions, with our snapping and publishing teams in Bangalore and Gdynia, as well as staff in bureaus for whom English is not a first language.
