Reuters seeks deputy bureau chief in Madrid

The Madrid bureau of Reuters is looking for a deputy bureau chief who can break news, write agenda-setting stories on business and politics and help manage a busy multi-lingual and multimedia newsroom.

Spain has a dynamic and varied news file: an independence movement in Catalonia, anti-establishment forces that are rewriting the nation’s young democracy, and a private sector that is in the grip of M&A fever. It boasts three of the euro zone’s biggest banks, the world’s largest clothing retailer Inditex and telecom giant Telefonica.

Spain is also exposed to Brexit in unique ways: it is home to more British retirees than any other European country and claims sovereignty over the British territory of Gibraltar. Spain’s economy is on the rebound and tourism is running at record levels, but the nation has very high rates of inequality and youth unemployment which pose long-term threats to its stability.

The successful candidate will be able to generate insightful story ideas that appeal to investors and media clients, and will have strong editing and leadership skills. She or he will also show an ability to work very closely with the Spanish service, television, pix, EMEA editors and other bureaus in the region.

Fluent Spanish is essential.
