Reuters is looking for an experienced journalist with a passion for speed, good news judgment and strong writing skills to lead our team covering Austrian business, politics, economics and general news from Vienna.
Austria is home to the leading foreign lenders and insurers in central and eastern Europe, cutting-edge technology specialists like Voestalpine and energy group OMV, and Telekom Austria, which acquisitive billionaire Carlos Slim aims to build into a regional powerhouse.
Its talkative central bank governor makes Austria punch above its weight in the euro zone, while the mainstream parties that have dominated post-war politics face a growing challenge from a resurgent, eurosceptic right wing.
The U.N. watchdog agency in charge of monitoring Iran’s nuclear programme, OPEC headquarters and a host of international organizations make Vienna a cosmopolitan centre that attracts many high-profile visitors. It is also a hub for regional energy supplies and trading. Its rich music and theatre scene make it a cultural treasure. We are looking for someone who is full of ideas and has a knack for finding stories that lurk beneath the surface.
The chief correspondent will be expected to set an example on the file with hard-hitting, insightful stories of their own, as well as motivate and guide a small team of reporters. We are looking for an enthusiastic, aggressive reporter with a track record of developing sources and making big ideas come alive on the file.
The ideal candidate will be flexible enough to jump between corporate, financial and political stories and adept at seeing the strands that link them together. He/she should be comfortable snapping, writing colorful wraps and steering deeply reported stories through the desk. Importantly, we need someone who is calm under pressure and a team player who will work constructively with the German language colleagues, news editors and other bureaus in the region and beyond.
