Reuters is looking for an inspirational leader, insightful editor and exceptional reporter to lead our commodities news team in China, where slowing economic growth is sending shock waves across the raw materials sector in the form of plummeting demand for steel making ingredients and reversing trade flows in an array of energy products.
The chosen candidate will need to drive coverage on two parallel, interconnected tracks: breaking market-moving real-time news for professional traders ahead of the competition, while also producing sophisticated enterprise and investigative work that highlights emerging trends and tells a global financial audience about things that other people don’t want them to know.
Competing at both ends of the spectrum, from split-second specialist spot news to agenda-setting long-form enterprise, requires clear leadership, smart strategies, savvy news ideas – and above all a fierce determination to win.
The successful candidate will also be able to lead stories on data and policy changes from start to finish, and inspire the team to do the same – getting them a fast start with alerts, turning around quick updates to make sense of data and policy announcements that can often be difficult to interpret, and developing follow-up angles.
China is by far the world’s biggest single commodities market. Be it oil, metals, gas, coal, renewable fuels, agriculture or textiles, what China does impacts the commodity markets and industry like nothing else.
As a result, the commodities team leader will also need to collaborate closely with economics, companies and political news teams to ensure professional-grade commodities contributions are made to the country’s biggest stories of the day.
Requirements
– Drive, ambition and a passion for winning every part of the news cycle, from breaking alerts to deep enterprise
– Proven ability to conceive and execute ahead-of-the-curve stories for a professional financial audience
– Masterful editing skills to produce clear, sharp, sophisticated copy, quickly
– Track record of independently writing and reporting stories, from spot news to original analysis
– Ability to lead a large, diverse team and through consistently high standards, coaching and career development
– Minimum 5 years of news wire experience, preferably related to energy or commodity markets
– Mandarin language skills desirable
