Banking remains the central cog in the sputtering European economy. Many of the sector’s biggest names are still restructuring to reflect the demands of tough regulation seven years after the end of global financial crisis.
Margins are under pressure from low interest rates, a new eurozone banking supervisor is finding its feet and Europe’s investment banks are struggling to keep pace with their powerful U.S. rivals.
And that is just the start – this challenging beat offers a regular diet of high-profile people moves, job cuts, massive fines for mis-selling and misconduct, shareholder cash calls, M&A, political and public anger over big bonuses and bailouts, innovation in financial technology and the war against cyber crime.
We need a confident team player with plenty of initiative, a strong track record of scoops as well as the ability to spot trends and generate innovative story ideas. You should be comfortable speaking to major bank CEOs and top politicians, and you’ll be expected to land exclusive interviews and build up a rich list of sources spanning banking, politics, regulation, headhunting and technology.
Are you capable of dissecting a balance sheet and crunching data to show trends and back up analyses? If so, then talk to us.
The successful candidate also needs to be a strong writer capable of filing quick-fire alerts and slick copy on results days, as well as authoritative, agenda setting analyses that unpick complex financial market issues and resonate with dotcom readers as well as an expert audience.
As part of a broader London Corporate Finance team based in Reuters’ UK headquarters in Canary Wharf, you will be expected to co-ordinate closely with European banking reporters, the UK Banking Correspondent, London Investment Banking correspondent, European Regulation correspondent and Government & Economics teams across the continent and share some duties on a busy financials file spanning white-collar crime, investment and insurance.
You will work closely with colleagues in Asia and the Americas, particularly in Hong Kong, Singapore and New York, on global banking stories.
You will share coverage of the major British banks with the UK Banking reporter, and be responsible for covering news from the major U.S., Asian and European banks that have thousands of staff across London.
Essential Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
– Break a steady stream of major European banking news
– Build team source list with high-value contacts
– Write quality, agenda-setting longer-form stories
– Assist broader financials team with stories, where needed
– Ensure Reuters news standards are rigorously upheld at all times
