Reuters seeks a US financial regulation correspondent

Reuters is looking for an experienced U.S. Financial Regulation Correspondent to cover the major financial regulators –primarily the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – as part of our broader Global Finance & Markets team. We’re looking for someone with a passion for breaking news and writing quick analytical takes, as well as deeply reported stories.

Based in Washington D.C., the U.S. Financial Regulation Correspondent will focus on sourcing up with regulators, lawyers, lobbyists, lawmakers and their staffers, compliance consultants, and other key industry stakeholders. The role sits within a broader team that covers banking, insurance, corporate finance, white collar crime, fintech and markets. The successful candidate will be able to deliver scoops and insightful enterprising stories on a range of regulation and policy issuers– from the SEC’s new climate disclosure rule, to the CFPB’s crackdown on bank junk fees and Congress’ latest stab at cryptocurrency legislation. They will also work closely with other reporters across the team to cover key intersectional stories, such as how regulations are preventing banks from launching cryptocurrency products and climate risks into their annual stress tests.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the financial policy landscape, a proven track record of building sources and getting inside scoops, and a desire to work on deeply reported stories.

The job offers a opportunity for a talented and ambitious journalist to make an impact on a competitive and high-profile beat with the world’s largest independent multimedia news organization.

About the Role

As our U.S. Financial Regulation Correspondent you will:

  • Cover the country’s major financial regulators – principally the U.S. SEC and CFPB – staying on top scheduled and spot news developments, including new rule-makings, speeches and enforcement actions
  • Work closely with colleagues on the broader U.S. and Global Finance & Markets team to break news about financial and corporate regulatory developments
  • Build a strong network of regulatory sources, as well as sources within the broader DC financial policy ecosystem
  • Work on insightful and high-impact stories within the wider finance and markets news file
  • Be able to work with teams including pictures, graphics and video to develop 360-degree storytelling

About You

To be our U.S. Financial Regulation Correspondent, you will likely have:

  • At least five years’ experience as a journalist
  • A track record of breaking news
  • Excellent source-building and writing skills, and a passion to own and lead big news developments
  • A deep understanding of financial regulation and the evolving financial policy space and the ability to explain it to a global audience
  • The ability to collaborate with other reporters and be a team player
  • The ability to jump on and manage breaking stories and generate quick pivot analytical and contextual stories
