Reuters seeks a US energy market reporter (level 1 journalist – temp)

Reuters is seeking a focused, driven journalist who is passionate about breaking news to take up a temporary position with the U.S. energy team in New York. This is a position for a reporter interested in covering the energy industry, ranging across power and oil markets to project development and infrastructure. You will covering physical cash markets and futures on oil, power pricing and grid problems, as well as international energy flows, trading strategies, boardroom upheaval and investment trends across the sector.

The successful candidate will need to play their part in ensuring Reuters wins the biggest energy stories. You will deliver breaking news on oil output, consumption, transportation, storage, exports and imports. You will report on the biggest stories across the power sector- whether they be in grid failures, upgrades, gas, coal, renewables, LNG or the energy transition. The candidate should have strong team skills and be keen to join a competitive reporting squad that has a hard-won reputation for producing agenda-setting coverage for both our core energy and commodity market users, as well as for our media, investor and financial professional audience. Our regional energy correspondents are based in New York, Houston, Washington DC, Canada and Latin America- so the ability to work in a virtual team is essential.

About this Role

In this role, you will:

  • Closely monitor and report on regional U.S. fuel, crude and power markets.
  • Break news in those markets and sectors.
  • Develop expertise in U.S. energy markets.
  • Develop, pitch and deliver initiative stories.
  • Use multimedia as appropriate to tell stories- graphics, pictures and TV
  • Work together with large global teams to break news and undertake initiative stories

About You

You’re a fit for this role, if you have:

  • Experience reporting in energy or financial markets
  • Proven ability to break news fast and reliably.
  • Excellent written English.
  • Track record of developing industry sources and breaking news on a competitive beat.
  • Comfort with maintaining and using databases to generate data-driven stories.
  • Strong news judgment, ability to write with speed, clarity and accuracy.
  • Proven ability to report and execute initiative stories.
  • Strong data handling & analysis skills.
