Reuters is looking for an experienced, sharp and ambitious news editor to run a region that spans more than 20 countries, from the economic and political heavyweights of Brazil and Mexico to smaller nations that bring outsized influence to bear on geopolitics and global markets.

This is one of the most exciting and rewarding challenges in Reuters. It calls for a leader with superb news judgment, a person who can motivate and develop a talented regional newsroom to build on its agenda-setting and award-winning work on issues ranging from systematic deforestation to organized crime.

As the leader of more than 90 journalists across the region, you will be well positioned to help drive Reuters coverage of major global themes such as climate change, the energy transition, supply chains, migration, and the future of democracy and democratic institutions.

You will work with industry, investigative and desk editors to oversee a real-time, 24/7 news file in three languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese. You will also collaborate with visuals and graphics editors, embracing different story-telling formats tailored to our different audiences.

You should have:

  • Excellent news judgment and outstanding journalistic ability
  • At least five years’ experience in editorial leadership roles
  • Experience leading a large team and a proven ability to create a high-performance culture by managing effectively, differentiating performance, developing talent, and building diverse teams. Can also lead and manage change.
  • Ability to deliver team performance for all client groups against key objectives for speed, accuracy, Trust principles, exclusivity and agenda-setting coverage in all formats.
  • Familiarity with different storytelling formats. You must also demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness leading the day-to-day editorial operation.
  • An ability to articulate and implement a wider strategic editorial plan for both daily coverage and longer-term coverage of stories in the region. Must be able to see the big picture whilst managing competing priorities and show decisiveness and superb judgement to achieve this.
  • Proven ability to be a role model to bureau chiefs, with a track record of developing effective working relationships with senior managers, general managers, other regional editors, business colleagues and HR/Finance
  • Excellent Spanish or Portuguese

The preferred location for this role is Mexico City but Sao Paolo or another big regional center will be considered for the right candidate. The position will report to the Global Managing Editor for Newsgathering (Politics, Economics & World News).
