Reuters is seeking an experienced and ambitious news leader to oversee its Washington bureau and drive agenda-setting coverage of politics, policy and the economy during the second Trump administration and a period of enormous change in the United States.

This consequential job comes at an exciting time when consumers of Reuters’ news both across the United States and the wider globe seek to understand the actions and impact of a swiftly changing U.S. government.

The position requires superb news judgment, high-level source development and people-management skills, strong writing and editing ability and experience covering the biggest stories through daily spot news, beat-focused scoops and investigative work. Experience managing, guiding and developing a large, diverse team and collaborating effectively with colleagues reporting on related topics, including financial markets, is a must. The ability to work closely with visual journalists to tell stories in engaging, insightful and visually rich ways is critical.

About the Role

As the Washington Bureau Chief, you will:

  • Lead a team of editors, reporters, video journalists and photographers to break exclusive news and publish insightful stories across the White House, Congress and the broader federal government.
  • Direct coverage of policy and political issues including taxes, the budget, foreign policy, national security, immigration, the economy, trade, tariffs and countless others.
  • Set the agenda for U.S. coverage, communicating clarity of mission and clear priorities amid a firehose of daily news and fast-moving news environment.
  • Collaborate effectively on stories of global interest with colleagues worldwide.
  • Ensure depth and quality in everything we publish: from spot news through to investigative work.
  • Represent Reuters externally on standards, access, diplomatic and security issues.
  • Steer development and career progression across a large, diverse team.

About You

You are a fit for the role of Washington Bureau Chief if you have:

  • At least ten years of experience editing and reporting.
  • At least five years of experience managing a team of journalists.
  • A deep understanding of U.S. politics, government and policy issues.
  • A proven track record of framing, pitching and editing both breaking news and initiative stories, delivering agenda-setting big-picture stories ahead of the competition.
  • A strong record of helping journalists develop sources and break news.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of visual reporting and storytelling.
  • Strong management and leadership skills including the ability to inspire and support journalists with a wide range of experience and skills.
  • Demonstrable experience establishing a newsroom culture of teamwork and growth.
  • Strong inter-personal, diplomatic and communication skills to represent Reuters’ interests externally.
