Reuters is looking for an experienced business journalist to manage our coverage of major corporate stories during U.S. hours.

The Companies Breaking News Editor will identify the biggest corporate stories as they break and look for ways to distinguish our file, working with beat reporters, global industry editors, other breaking news editors, our Bangalore newsroom and publishing editors. The successful candidate will drive coverage of news and themes that cut across corporate sectors and geographies, connecting the dots for our global audience.

We are looking for a newsroom leader with a deep understanding of business, acute news judgment, creative story ideas, the ability to make fast decisions, and the agility to manage multiple stories at the same time. Producing fast, smart, and distinctive reporting in the first hours after a big story breaks is a core mission of Reuters and critical to our financial, professional and media customers.

The job is based in New York, though other U.S east coast locations may be considered.

About the Role

As Companies Breaking News Editor, you will:

  • Shape our corporate news file to meet the needs of financial, professional and media customers
  • News-edit the biggest stories of the day and assign reporting lines to yield scoops, distinctive sidebars and connect the dots for global audiences
  • Plan ahead for major events to ensure that we have a strong reporting plan, prewrites and Newsplanner entries
  • Think strategically about news priorities and redirect efforts away from stories that don’t serve our customers well
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other companies editors as well as finance and markets teams, the Bangalore bureau, breaking news hubs, and visuals and graphic desks

About You

To be Companies Breaking News Editor, you will likely have:

  • Solid professional experience reporting on business news and/or editing business stories at a major news organization
  • Sophisticated news judgment and ability to prioritize coverage and delegate assignments
  • Strong grasp of what investors look for in company news stories, and understanding of our financial, professional and media customers
  • Knowledge of corporate accounts, valuations and how to use them effectively in stories
  • Ability to make decisions quickly and edit news stories well under tight deadlines
  • Collaborative leadership skills, an enjoyment of teamwork and working globally
