We expect the successful candidate for this position to be based in Almaty or Astana.

Reuters are seeking a correspondent to cover Central Asia, bringing one of the most fascinating regions to a global audience.

Responsible for coverage of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, this is a position for a passionate reporter who can write with style, and break news on everything from geopolitics to uranium and gas supplies.

The patchwork of former Soviet republics in Central Asia is now a theatre for competition between Russia, China and the United States, and one of the key routes for supplies into Russia. Central Asia also holds some of the world most sought-after resources, including 45% of the world’s proven natural gas reserves, nearly a fifth of the world’s proven oil reserves, it produces 40% of the world’s uranium, and has a host of other important raw materials including manganese ore, chromium, and rare earths such as monazite, zircon, apatite, xenotime, pyrochlore, allanite, and columbite.

This is one of the most demanding and exhilarating roles in Reuters: At a time of momentous change, you will write the story of Central Asia for the world, explaining the big picture while ensuring Reuters provides the swiftest and most insightful coverage of everything from commodities and companies to geopolitics and the story of the peoples of this great region. Our financial and media clients want deeper coverage of this region.

You will be fluent in English and Russian (any of the languages of Central Asia would be a plus), have superior writing skills on everything from snaps to deeper stories and help manage a network of stringers across the region.
