Rest of World seeks a publisher

June 4, 2025

Posted by Chris Roush

Rest of World is a nonprofit publication rewriting the map of global tech journalism, telling stories of innovation, adaptation and rising power beyond the Western bubble. In our first five years, our award-winning newsroom has reported from more than 100 countries, covering the long tail of tech everywhere: AI, e-commerce, Big Tech, autonomous cars, semiconductors, creator economics, crypto frauds, and beyond.

As the global order continues to shift amid transformational new technology, Rest of World is also evolving to meet the moment. We’re becoming more focused, more innovative and more essential to the globally curious professionals in Western markets, primarily North America, the UK and Europe.

To help lead Rest of World through this next chapter, we are seeking a strategic and entrepreneurial Publisher to join the publication. This is a rare opportunity to take the reins of an internationally respected newsroom and help reshape it for impact, sustainability and engagement in this new era.

The publisher will be responsible for the business, brand, and sustainable growth of Rest of World, with a key focus on driving revenue diversification and establishing multiple funding streams. This includes developing and executing strategies to grow audience engagement, expand monetization, and build partnerships. You’ll work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and senior leadership to ensure the publication is editorially excellent, operationally sound, and widely read by the people who impact the world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Align editorial, audience, and revenue teams around core goals

Brand & Audience

  • Sharpen our positioning as the leading voice on tech for Western professionals
  • Build high-impact content partnerships with aligned institutions (media, policy, academic, and tech platforms)
  • Ensure that editorial work is distributed effectively and reaches the right, influential audiences
  • Maintain a deep understanding of industry trends, audience preferences, and the competitive landscape to identify new opportunities for reaching our readers

Organizational Leadership

  • Lead and manage the organization, including setting publishing strategies, driving reader growth, and ensuring financial sustainability
  • Collaborate with the Founder on implementing the direction and structure for our next phase
  • Recruit and retain world-class talent across the editorial and business sides
  • Uphold a culture of clarity, innovation, and purpose

Qualifications

  • Have led or helped build a media or nonprofit organization with global ambition
  • Have a sharp instinct for audience, influence, and revenue, with demonstrated experience in tying all three together
  • Be able to scale smartly, knowing when to grow, when to pause, and when to prune
  • Know how to lead amid tech disruption, especially the opportunity GenAI offers to publishing organizations
  • Be passionate about international journalism, equity in tech, and storytelling that changes how the world sees itself
  • Know how to manage ambiguity, make tough calls, keep costs lean, and bring people with you, especially in times of change
  • Experience with nonprofit journalism, content licensing, or philanthropy is a plus
  • Deep networks in tech, policy, or global affairs are a plus
