Quartz seeks weekend writer

April 9, 2015

Posted by Chris Roush

Quartz is looking for a reporter to write news stories and short features on weekends, and do some web production, social media editing, and site management.

You would be part of the growing Quartz team in New York, and help shape our efforts to take bracingly creative approaches to covering business news. You would be the main on-duty reporter over the US weekend hours, though could draw on some of the broader staff for support.

You would play a critical role in identifying and framing stories so they find a broad readership via social media, whether those are stories you yourself write or they’re written by Quartz colleagues. Our expectation is that you would write a few pieces each day, and on Sundays write a draft of the Daily Brief email newsletter.

It’s possible to do this as a part-time position totaling up to 19 hours per week, only on weekends.

But for the right candidate looking for a full-time job, we’d look for you to write about management three other days during the week. We’re hoping to build on our already-strong coverage of business leadership, strategy, careers, and workplace topics.

We are looking for someone with professional-reporting experience, web-production fluency, a facility with data, an entrepreneurial approach to their work, and the ability to convey curiosity and subtle humor in their writing. The reporter should have a track record in and passion for framing and writing stories with social potential. And they should feel comfortable with using formats other than 700-word articles (such as shorter pieces, photos, and charts) when they’re better for efficiently and effectively getting a story across. International experience and languages are a plus.

To apply, please submit a cover letter indicating whether you’re looking for a weekend-only position, resume, and five links to relevant work. The links matter most.
