Quartz seeks a tech editor

Quartz

Quartz seeks an experienced editor to lead our technology coverage, taking an entrepreneurial approach to defining our journalism in this area and working with a team of reporters focused on producing original insights on the news, reported scoops, and informed analysis.

This editor will shape our efforts to take uniquely creative approaches to covering technology news through a business lens. Developing fresh ways to look at technology and trends and translating them into interesting, provocative articles is a central challenge of this job. You should expect to bring a solid grounding in data and a healthy dose of skepticism to the task.

We’d look to you to rapidly identify people who deserve more attention, see around corners to where technology and the tech business are heading, and surface detailed examples that help readers understand what the industry is obsessing about, including the rise of AI, the existential crisis at Facebook, the rising dominance of Amazon, the diversity crisis in tech, and ubiquity of fake news–with excitement about the fundamental potential of technology and startups as well as thoughtfulness, a critical eye, and creativity.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of high-impact editing and reporting, management experience, and a sense of urgency about covering the tech sector’s largest companies and their influence on the broader culture. The editor is cool under pressure, can edit quickly and accurately, buzzes with ideas, and is intellectually curious. You get a kick out of taking other people’s work and making it shine, like experimenting with formats other than the 700-word article, and are comfortable using data to tell a story.

We’re looking for candidates with a minimum of 5 or more years of relevant experience, a strong grasp of technology trends, and a good feel for the rhythms of online news. International experience and languages are a plus. Ideally this editor will be based either in San Francisco or New York City.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, and five links to relevant work. The links matter most.
