Quartz seeks an experienced reporter to contribute to the newsroom’s coverage of global climate change, with a focus on producing original insights on the news, reported scoops, and informed analysis.
This reporter will view the climate crisis through the lens of business. You’ll identify industries that are expanding in response to our climate-changed world, along with those that have the potential to mitigate or adapt to the effects of climate change. The energy sector will be a leading focus of that coverage, but there’s room to cover any climate-related industry with an eye toward solutions.
This reporter will evaluate the ability for technologies to scale, identify barriers to adoption in different parts of the world, and investigate the potential negative effects of new approaches. We’d want you to be excited about the potential for technology and policy to address the climate crisis, while staying critical in your coverage of it. You should expect to bring a solid grounding in data and a healthy dose of skepticism to the task.
We’d look to you to identify people who deserve more attention, see around corners to where technology and business are heading, and surface detailed examples that help readers understand the many ways climate change is shaping the future. You may write trend-based chart-driven posts, sleuth out the companies innovating in energy storage, dive deep into negative emissions technologies, and surface the wide-ranging effects of climate change on global trade and environmental health.
The successful candidate will have a creative, entrepreneurial, and collaborative approach to their work, and the desire to meet their audience where they are. You should be excited about using platforms other than a website and formats other than 700-word articles when they’re better for efficiently and effectively getting a story across.
This role is best suited to a reporter with at least three years of professional experience. International experience and languages are a plus. Location may be flexible.
