Quartz seeks a deputy news editor in London

Quartz’s deputy news editor in Europe collaborates with our editors and reporters to produce coverage with bracing creativity and ambition.

You will be involved in every aspect of Quartz’s journalism, including planning for the short and long term, assignments, our daily editorial and production flow, working with our audience-development team, supervising production of our Daily Brief email newsletter and breaking news app, and coordinating with colleagues in other regions.

Each day, through your work, you will demonstrate a deep understanding of strategies and tactics for producing quality daily journalism that finds a broad readership online. Specifically, you will ensure that editors are aware of stories and events of import to their coverage areas. You will work with them and their teams to brainstorm ideas, help them think through angles, and apply an obsessions-based approach to their coverage. You will have a keen sense of the social conversation and how Quartz can lend its voice to contribute to that conversation in an intelligent and thoughtful way.

The news editor will be responsible for coordinating coverage of big news events, whether they’re breaking stories like a terror attack, or scheduled events like Brexit or the World Cup. When appropriate, you will ensure an editor has been tasked to lead coverage efforts, support them as needed, and ensure there is effective communication of plans across time zones. You will regularly be involved in editing stories filed from across the newsroom, especially ones that fall into your time zone.

You will represent Quartz in the region on television and radio, at events, and in conversations with partners. You will also be encouraged to have your own areas of intellectual and journalistic interest, and to write/create regularly, as time allows.

This editor will possess an obsessive interest in news and compulsion to find the most original and smart approaches for tackling it. You will have a keen eye for those stories that will appeal to Quartz’s global audience. You will see the interconnectedness of things, and appreciate the value of approaching stories through the lenses of multiple Quartz obsessions.

The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of world affairs, a background in business or economic reporting, experience working in more than one country, knowledge of foreign languages, facility with data, a love of clear writing, and fluency in traditional reporting and editing methods, as well as a deep understanding of strategies and tactics for producing journalism that can find a broad readership online. The ability to juggle and prioritize multiple responsibilities, communicate well, and think on your feet will be essential.
