Quartz seeks an editor to help develop its Ideas coverage for readers, taking an entrepreneurial approach to defining our journalism in this area.
Ideas is our catchall word for, well, ideas, and is the part of the newsroom chiefly responsible for bringing outside voices to Quartz. We look to Ideas to obsess over the issues our readers are most consumed by, and to peer around corners to reveal the future shape of the global economy and our place in it. It’s about concepts that spark creativity, fuel innovation, and force change. At times these ideas will be provocative or counterintuitive, and the Deputy Ideas Editor must be comfortable with pushing past preconceived stereotypes to provide context for our readers.
Our contributors are entrepreneurs, executives, scientists, academics, artists, and others whose experience and expertise provide surprising insights and prompt conversation and debate. Their contributions are expressed as clear, bold arguments, and can be as simple as a tweet or Instagram story and extend to a live Q&A or a 1,200-word article.
Our ideal candidate will be plugged into vibrant networks of people, is cool under pressure, buzzes with ideas, and is intellectually curious and hungry to understand the world better. This person will be a consummate editor who is able to assign and edit copy with speed and precision across a broad range of topics from a wide variety of sources. The Deputy Ideas Editor will get a kick out of taking other people’s words and honing them to deliver their core insight and make them shine. She likes experimenting with formats other than the typical 700-word article and is comfortable with using data and visuals to tell a story.
A minimum of 2-3 years editing experience is required, in addition to some reporting experience. Event or community management experience is a plus. International experience and languages other than English are a big plus.
To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, and five links to relevant work.
Enterprise Values
Quartz recruits talent for two salient attributes or qualities:
- Force of Ideas: At the center of Quartz work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, and giving voice to the latter.
- Spirit of Generosity: Quartz seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct. Quartz writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
