This editor will be someone who is deeply conversant with the richness and variety of global cultures, and how they interconnect with the economic and technological forces shaping our world today. They are immersed in the social conversation, have strong instincts for the stories that audiences find engaging, and are a stickler for clean, stylish writing. The editor is at their best brainstorming ideas, working with writers to hone theirs, identifying unique angles, and tying it all together in visually compelling packages.
The culture editor will oversee a group of talented reporters who are adept at identifying what’s important and interesting in the infinite flow of news. The successful candidate will obsess over trends our readers are obsessed with, like the rise of CBD, to parse why they exist, who they’re for, and what they say about us. They might edit stories about the evolving idea of luxury to encompass time and attention, the ways social media is changing notions of influence and creating new ecosystems, how America’s trade war with China affects our lives, or simply what to watch now that Game of Thrones has ended.
This editor will work closely with the author of our Quartzy email and program our Quartzy edition home page. They will also collaborate with other journalists across the newsroom.
The ideal candidate has at least three years’ editing experience. They will view the internet as a crucial appendage, and see social platforms like Instagram and Reddit as places to both observe and engage. They should feel comfortable with a range of formats, including short posts, photos, videos, and charts, and letting the story guide them on the best way to tell it. International experience and languages are a plus.
