Puget Sound Business Journal seeks managing editor

The Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day management of all online and print content and owns the execution of the content strategy across multiple platforms and products, including a weekly print edition, daily online news site and email products.

Reporting directly to the Editor in Chief, the Managing Editor is the second highest-ranking employee in the newsroom, behind the Editor. This person plays a key role in the newsroom, editing much of the daily and weekly content, working closely with reporters and leading the organization’s news coverage.

It is mandatory that the candidate thrive in a breaking-news culture and have demonstrated content programming experience in an online environment. The primary goal of the Managing Editor is to craft timely and compelling products that drive loyal engagement, grow audience and extend the Business Journal brand in the digital and print space.

The job requires solid news judgment, strong headline writing skills and familiarity with SEO and site metrics. The Managing Editor must balance the highest standards for content with ambitious traffic and engagement objectives, must be calm under pressure and be able to quickly prioritize tasks.

The Managing Editor will also occasionally report and write news stories and features for both the online and print editions.

In addition to being a highly influential position in the day-to-day management of the newsroom, the Managing Editor works in partnership with the Editor in Chief to make strategic decisons regardling the long-term success of the publication, including participating in the hiring process, brainstorming new products and ensuring a positive culture.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS

·      Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

·      5-10 years of journalism experience

·      Strong headline writing and copy-editing skills

·      Familiarity with AP Style

·      SEO experience

·      Demonstrated use of databases to build interactive elements and features

·      Familiarity with content management systems

·      Basic HTML skills

·      Management experience is a plus, but not required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and Responsibilities, work schedules and/or location may change based on evolving business needs

·      Produce newsy, engaging daily online content.

·      Generate and execute digital content ideas.

·      Track metrics and measure engagement with an eye toward constant improvement.

·      Work with Audience Development Director and Social Media Manager to recommend creative approach/strategy for social media executions.

·      Work with editors, reporters and other stakeholders to plan new content and features.

·      Help staff identify and deploy tactics to meet traffic and engagement goals.

·      Work collaboratively with peers in design, research, and technology.

·      Regularly participate in and attend Business Journal sponsored events.

·      Take on any other assignment made by Editor in Chief.

·      Work cooperatively and collaboratively with all colleagues and professionally with sources.
