Puget Sound Biz Journal seeks tech editor

Puget Sound Business Journal is looking for a Technology Editor to continue our tradition of excellence in covering the region’s largest and most influential companies. The PSBJ Tech Editor will primarily cover Amazon, and lead coverage of AMZN across the 43 newsrooms in American City Business Journals. PSBJ has a history of breaking and owning significant stories on this beat. We expect that to continue.

Our ideal candidate has:
• Big-story reporting chops
• Sharp news judgment
• Exceptional source-building know-how
• Interviewing prowess
• Strong analytical and investigative experience
• Clear, sophisticating writing
• Emerging leadership skills

Whatever the platform, the PSBJ Tech Editor will produce content accompanied by perspective and context for an audience of business owners, executives and professionals who know that when AMZN sneezes, it’s possible the region will develop pneumonia.

We’re looking for significant scoops, sophisticated analysis, and savvy, exclusive coverage of the executives, ideas and characters who make AMZN go.

Here’s what this job is not: It’s not about covering the latest quarter-turn in AMZN’s expansion plans, or recasting press releases, or following the same coverage path as most other news outlets. And it’s definitely not about skimming the surface. This is one of the meatiest beats in our newsroom and across ACBJ.

Duties
The ideal PSBJ Tech Editor is competitive, collaborative and curious. He or she is expected to:
• Contribute both short- and long-form stories to our digital and print products
• Own every important story on his or her beats
• Use networking events, social media platforms and other community-building outlets to expand and fortify their source base and audience
• Work collaboratively with other newsroom staffers to maximize impact and accessibility of stories reported
• Meet or exceed goals related to audience engagement
Our Tech Editor will interact with reporters in other ACBJ newsrooms to ensure that Amazon news from Seattle and across the country gets play in every market that makes sense. There’s a ton of opportunity to develop leadership skill in this role. And scoops matter. A lot.

Skills
• Proven excellence in reporting and writing
• Unyielding curiosity, ability to break news and to identify newsworthy events and sources
• Strong analytical and investigative-interviewing skills
• Analytical fluency with public documents and records requests
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online
• A clear drive to develop sources and build audience
• Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
• Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that distinguishes the organization from competitors
• Multimedia skills, including video, photos, broadcast, on-camera, helpful

Experience
• Minimum of 3-5 years of journalism experience
• Proven experience building and maintaining a strong source base
• Proven experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience
• Knowledge of business principles essential
• Understanding of and experience covering public technology companies a plus
• Tech beat coverage experience a plus
• Same for Seattle-based reporting experience

Education
Bachelor’s in journalism or equivalent work experience
