Protocol seeks investigations editor, features editor

Protocol is a new media company focused on the people, power, and politics of the technology industry. Protocol will equip decision-makers and innovators in tech, legacy businesses and public policy with the reporting and insights they need to navigate a world in rapid change.

We’re hiring an investigations editor, preferably based in San Francisco, and a features editor, preferably based in San Francisco or New York.

Investigations Editor (preferably San Francisco-based)

The ideal candidate will have significant experience producing, directing, and/or editing high-impact investigative stories. You’ll know how to juggle long- and short-term projects, and you’ll be deft at helping investigative reporters work on both long and short time frames.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in digital journalism – and also a profound curiosity about and commitment to exploring new ways to tell stories and reach audiences. A deep working knowledge of the tech industry would be an advantage, but isn’t essential.

The ideal candidate will be committed to creating a culture of high ambitions, big ideas, and truly excellent work – and also one that is caring, diverse, inclusive, and fun.

The investigations editor will:

  • Lead a team of writers (staff and freelance) who will produce high-impact, reader-focused journalism that will lead our coverage and drive conversations in the tech industry, the larger business community, and governments around the world.
  • Work closely with the executive editor and editorial director to identify, recruit, hire, train, develop, inspire, and manage other journalists.
  • Serve as a moderator/expert at our events, on podcasts and conference calls, etc.

Features Editor (preferably San Francisco or New York-based)

The ideal candidate will have deep working knowledge of the tech industry and emerging technologies as well as significant experience producing, directing, and/or editing long-form stories.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in digital journalism – and also a profound curiosity about and commitment to exploring new ways to tell stories and reach audiences.

The ideal candidate will be committed to storytelling and the craft of writing. You will be obsessed with narrative and voice, and know how to help writers tell compelling, urgent, entertaining, and transfixing stories. You will be dedicated to creating a culture of high ambitions, big ideas, and truly excellent work – and also one that is caring, diverse, inclusive, and fun.

The features editor will:

  • Work with staff and freelance writers to conceive, assign, shape, and edit feature stories.
  • Work closely with the executive editor and editorial director to identify, recruit, hire, train, develop, inspire and manage other journalists.
  • Serve as a moderator/expert at our events, on podcasts and conference calls, etc.
