The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, California, is seeking an editor to help guide its business coverage. As editor of the North Bay Business Journal and business editor for The Press Democrat, the ideal candidate will work with a team of journalists whose beats include travel and tourism, the regional airport, manufacturing, tech, real estate, retail, restaurants and hospitality, agriculture, and the wine industry, for which the North Bay is world-famous.

North Bay Business Journal serves five counties through a weekly business tabloid. The position requires a strong editor who is passionate about digital-first journalism and committed to innovation, especially via social and visual media.

What you will do:

  • Collaborate with writers and other editors to develop business coverage, with the goal of executing high-interest stories across all platforms
  • Oversee several newsletters that target stories and regions on certain topics
  • Foster a creative and dynamic environment among colleagues that encourages innovation
  • Help lead coverage in tandem with our Events Team for special sections, while playing a key role in hosting, moderating, or contributing to special events throughout the year
  • Use analytics to identify topics for coverage and optimize the audience for stories
  • Work with all editors to collaborate on strategic planning and coverage ideas
  • Multitask, meet deadlines, and accurately fact-check information
  • Display strong networking and interpersonal skills to build relationships both within the newsroom and the community
  • Drive digital innovation by identifying and implementing new storytelling formats, emerging platforms, and multimedia integration to enhance reader engagement
  • Assist the breaking news teams during hours outside the normal newsgathering day, including weekends and holidays
  • Work with a remote team to bring your vision of weekly business tabloid content from edited copy to layout and design mode
  • Identify key dates and application materials for various industry foundations and organizations that support newsroom fellowships, such as Report for America and the California Local News Fellowship

What you will bring:

  • Proven success using analytics to guide news coverage
  • Proficiency in curating and producing newsletters
  • 3-5 of professional journalism experience in a newsroom
  • Experience employing social media to find story ideas and sources and to promote coverage
  • Ability to edit and write copy in a clear fashion, free of errors, and using AP Style
  • Supervisory experience leading a team of writers or digital producers
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to identify key newsgathering elements up to 12 months in advance for the editorial and photo calendar
  • Skillfulness at identifying talent, from reporting candidates to freelancers and beginning career journalists

Benefits and Compensation:

The salary range is $80,000 – $95,000 + cell stipend. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc.
