The Portland Business Journal is a part of American City Business Journals. We are looking for a data journalist to serve as our Research Director, responsible for telling the story of business through data.
The Research Director plays a key role in The Business Journal’s newsroom. ACBJ is reinventing its weekly print papers and digital products under the guidance of Mario Garcia and, most immediately, we need a dynamic Research Director in Portland to create weekly lists and drive our data collection.

The Portland Business Journal is the source of local business news in the greater Portland region. This is a vital and important role in our newsroom. The Research Director is responsible for developing and updating our weekly feature, The List, which breaks down various sectors of our market for our sophisticated audience of business decision makers. The Research Director also works with our team of editors and reporters to develop supplemental information that informs readers about the stories behind the numbers. The Research Director delivers content for digital and print platforms. The Research Director is responsible for maintaining and expanding The Business Journal’s database of companies in the greater Portland region, and other information relevant to business decision makers; producing Lists, directories and other research-based special publications. The Research Director also participates on enterprise reporting projects with the newsroom team.
The Research Director produces the Portland Business Journal’s weekly lists and, in collaboration with editors and reporters, stories and graphics to explain and magnify interesting trends, providing deep views into the rankings. In collaboration with other members of the editorial team, the Research Director also creates shorter, daily lists for our digital audience and assists with other research-driven news projects. The Research Director identifies and surveys companies to produce accurate lists with full participation of relevant companies or other parties. The Research Director maintains a database of companies and sources to be surveyed, accurately enters and sorts survey data, and is responsible for producing the annual Book of Lists.
Experience with Excel and the ability to learn new computer systems easily. Attention to detail; the discipline and ability to stay on schedule and meet deadlines. Skilled at analysis and interpretation. Proven ability in data collection, reporting and writing, ability to work independently. Commitment to producing lists and other research projects with 100 per cent accuracy.
