Politico seeks an energy reporter

POLITICO is seeking a sharp, aggressive reporter who can bring energy and creativity to a topic that touches the lives of every American: the U.S. electricity grid and the utility industry. This beat has never been hotter, with powerful opportunities to probe disasters that have plagued power networks from California to Texas, the Biden administration’s vows to decarbonize the sector and utilities’ scramble to integrate wind and solar as new fleets of electric vehicles hit the road.

We’re looking for someone who can translate technical moves from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the broader industry into engaging stories for plugged-in energy experts and our broader POLITICO audience. Once the realm of policy wonks and utility lawyers, FERC is now at the center of a rapidly shifting energy economy. Mapping out its contours will offer opportunities for scoops, deep dives and analytical takes across all POLITICO platforms. Climate change, pipeline disputes and renewable energy all feature prominently on this competitive beat.

What You’ll Need:

  • Familiarity with the ins and outs of the nation’s power networks and FERC or other regulatory agencies
  • Proven ability to dig up scoops and deliver in a fast-paced newsroom environment
  • A deep understanding of political dynamics around climate change and renewable energy
  • Ability to spot and write clearly about the utility sector and regulatory trends
