Politico seeks a temporary editorial art director & designer

POLITICO seeks an experienced Editorial Art Director and designer to join our Visuals Team. This is a temporary position spanning September 2023 – April 2024.

The ideal candidate will have keen editorial judgement and a passion for visually driven storytelling.

They’ll also have experience working closely with photo editors, designers, story editors and reporters to brainstorm visual approaches, pinpoint and prioritize visual opportunities, and craft our approach. They’ll have a full rolodex of illustrators and agents, and a portfolio that shows a knack for visual continuity and thoughtful pacing.

This position will also be responsible for providing constructive, actionable feedback to members of the Visuals Team. That means sharpening visual approaches, suggesting illustrators, editing daily in-house illustrations, and, pending experience, creating your own.

Comfort with deadlines is a must. Each week the Visuals Team partners on narratives ranging from Magazine features to Policy explainers and newsletter key art to pop-culture.

What You’ll Need:

  • Demonstrated ability to identify story candidates for an illustrated or visual approach and ability to clearly articulate your ideas in meetings and to key stakeholders
  • Strong portfolio that highlights art directing illustrations with freelancers
  • Ability to navigate multiple design projects in tandem and work well across teams
  • Fluency in visual standards: image quality, resolution, neatness, precision, typography, hierarchy, use of white space and color
  • An orientation toward problem solving where no design task is too small
  • Experience working across teams to craft compelling stories and storytelling formats and an eagerness to participate in team brainstorms around storytelling approach or form
  • Comfortable taking design direction on deadline while balancing the overall aesthetic of the approach
  • Experience producing a digital ‘art plan’ with visual variety that tells a compelling story
  • Mastery of the Adobe Creative suite

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to produce photo illustrations for quicker turnarounds
  • Experience with basic photo research
  • Eagerness to learn or developed skills in HTML and CSS
  • Work is 100% online so comfort producing stories in a CMS is strongly preferred, though training will be part of the onboarding

This position can be fully remote or on site in Arlington, VA.
