POLITICO is seeking a fast and energetic reporter to cover breaking news in California and contribute to our California Playbook franchise. This is a brand new position that will support our ambitious growth plans in the state.
We’re looking for a journalist who can write multiple daily stories on tight deadlines while also supporting our AM and PM Playbook newsletters. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to be the one of most prolific and widely-read reporters covering California politics.
What You’ll Do:
- Report and write daily breaking news items about California politics and policy.
- Closely monitor major storylines in Sacramento and statewide.
- Write reported and aggregated items for our California Playbook newsletters and assist with other California newsletters as needed.
- Aid colleagues in covering legislative sessions and high-profile public events.
- Stakeout key legislative meetings and interview lawmakers and others in the State Capitol.
- This position may include some site management, social media and production responsibilities.
What You’ll Need:
- The ability to write quick, clean and accurate stories on deadline.
- A deep interest in covering California politics. Prior experience covering California politics and policy is desired but not required.
- The ability to work independently yet in close coordination with editors and reporting colleagues.
- A rigorous commitment to fair-minded, nonpartisan journalism.
The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Sacramento, CA is $65,000.00-$75,000.00 per year.
