Politico is looking for an experienced editorial leader of impeccable judgment and a broad range of journalistic interests to become the publication’s inaugural Standards & Ethics Editor. This role will sit at the heart of our editorial team, working proactively with other senior editors and the entire newsroom to ensure the integrity of our journalism across all platforms.
As much as any editor or reporter upholds high standards – and as much any editorial employee is expected to behave ethically – there are countless issues that come up in the course of doing journalism that a newsroom leader dedicated to standards and ethics will help the publication work through successfully. This role comes with a robust mandate to uphold Politico’s editorial values and commitment to authoritative, nonpartisan and tough-mindedly fair journalism; to serve as an advocate for readers; to provide an essential quality check on all the work we do; and to set guidelines but more importantly in real time help journalists resolve knotty ethical questions as they arise.
Above all, the role is intended to allow the publication to be aggressive and innovative in ways that deepen our bonds of trust with readers.
What you’ll do:
- Serve as a hands-on editor who would take a lead, in partnership with other editors, of pre-publication guidance of reporting and pre-publication review and clearance of our most sensitive or ambitious content
- Define and enforce policies on ethics and professional behavior for reporters and editors
- Ensure quality controls are in place across the publication
- Design and lead training programs for POLITICO journalists
- Address and resolve any issues related to our journalism after it is published
The ideal candidate will be an experienced editor or reporter who’s able to challenge ideas or approaches in a spirit of collaboration. Someone who has worked in and will embrace our commitment to building an inclusive and diverse newsroom.
