The PG is looking for an innovative and energetic photojournalist with exceptional photo and video skills to join our award-winning team. The ideal candidate must have a passion for dynamic visual storytelling and high-impact journalism. This journalist should demonstrate high command of techniques and sophisticated craftsmanship in photo/video storytelling to create compelling, informative, emotional and intimate stories in one of America’s most visually vibrant cities.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to …
- Photograph daily assignments, including breaking news, health, features, business and sports
- Develop photo stories and/or packages for our popular In Focus photo blog and its Sunday print component
- Generate story ideas of interest to our diverse community and that can be turned into long-term projects
- Produce daily assignment videos for Post-Gazette.com and our social media platforms, as well as polished, longer-term video projects
Candidate Qualifications:
- Exceptional core photojournalism skills (photography and videography, reporting, caption writing and journalistic ethics)
- Experience with multimedia storytelling techniques on multiple platforms
- Ability to use basic and advanced computer programs, including but not limited to video editing software, Adobe Photoshop and Photo Mechanic
- Command of writing, spelling, grammar, AP style
- Self-motivated and self-directed
- Command of media trends, evolving visual technologies and practices
- Organizational skills and effective communication skills
- Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment
- Understanding of social media and how to respond and engage fan base on digital platforms
- Ability to get along with diverse personalities and work collaboratively within the newsroom
- Able to give and accept peer-to-peer feedback and training
- Apply innovative, creative thinking to support the company’s goals
Education and Experience:
- 1 to 5 years of professional experience, or equivalency
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. We will also consider candidates with strong internships or robust freelance experience
- Proven experience collaborating with a team of reporters, editors on deadline
