Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Cooperation – WESA seeks an editor

90.5 WESA is looking for an Editor to lead and supervise one of WESA’s newsroom teams to provide thoughtful, comprehensive coverage for both digital and broadcast audiences. The Editor helps reporters develop not just individual stories, but beats as a whole, including developing sources and generating ideas. The Editor is skilled in editing multiplatform stories for broadcast and web, including incorporating multimedia elements and promoting via social media. The Editor works closely with other editors and the News Director to coordinate coverage. This full-time exempt position reports to the News Director.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Field, craft and approve story pitches from reporters while guiding reporters through the reporting/editing process from ideation through publication.
  • Provide comprehensive, thoughtful editing of audio and text versions of spot and feature stories, to fully take advantage of the respective mediums.
  • Generate your own reporting ideas for assignment.
  • Lead and supervise a small newsroom team of 3-5 reporters.
  • Advance the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals of the newsroom and PCBC.
  • Provide training, guidance, development opportunities and management to staff.
  • Provide comprehensive, thoughtful editing of audio and text versions of spot and feature stories, to fully take advantage of the respective mediums.
  • Supervise reporters’ resources and monthly expenses.
  • Provide support to the other editors as needed.
  • Work in the on-call rotation and sometimes during off hours and weekends as news may demand.
  • Make public appearances as required to enhance WESA’s brand.
  • Participate in on-air and online fundraising.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3 or more years of editing experience in a professional newsroom with multimedia news content training and experience (radio experience preferred).
  • A Bachelor’s degree in journalism-related field or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to guide, assist, and develop story ideas from reporters.
  • Ability to edit for both broadcast and web audiences.
  • Strong on-air and digital reporting, writing and technical skills.
  • Familiarity with audio recording and editing software and recording equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated with a track record of producing daily news stories and features of interest to local audiences.
  • Sound and ethical judgment, with a commitment to balance and fairness.
  • Creativity and sound judgment in social media usage.
  • Knowledge of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania is helpful.

The minimum compensation for the Editor’s position is $57,000, commensurate with experience and ability.
