Pittsburgh Business Times seeks a managing editor

The Pittsburgh Business Times, an award-winning business news organization in one of the most dynamic business markets in the country, is looking for a Managing Editor. It’s a great time to be a business journalist in Pittsburgh – the city is in the midst of a transformation and rapidly diversifying its economic base.

Duties

As Managing Editor, you will be the newsroom’s chief operating officer, overseeing and ensuring the smooth flow of content from conception to publishing on all platforms. As the newsroom’s most hands-on manager and coach of reporters, the ME brings ideas, inspiration, and guidance to the staff, and actively directs the deployment of resources online, on mobile, in email, print and on social. The ME reports directly to the Editor in Chief.

Skills

Strong news judgment and a solid news sense An ability to make snap judgments about how to tell stories A proven ability to manage people and content An interest in inspiring, motivating and mentoring reporters, editors and other staff members A strong desire to agitate for growth and change, and to bring innovative ideas to the table Belief that serving your audience is a newsroom’s chief responsibility An interest in community outreach Exceptional communication skills Keen organizational skills A drive to create a collegial, collaborative newsroom culture and vibe Comfortable operating in rapidly changing media environment Daily, and preferably, weekly experience for a business news operation Beat reporting experience Strong wordsmith with a demonstrated talent for story development Adept editor with an eye toward accuracy Great headline writer who knows how to engage an audience Hands-on experience in guiding and contributing to large-scale editorial projects Ease working in a digital environment and on social media

Experience

Minimum of 3 to 5 years of management and/or team leadership experience

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
